Room at Glasgow hospital hotter than Gran Canaria as temperature hits 26ºC

The temperature in individual rooms at Scotland’s super-hospital has hit 26C (79F) – making them hotter than Gran Canaria was yesterday.

A relative, who didn’t want to be identified, tried in vain for a week to adjust the temperature in a room at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

She said: “I am not talking about this to shame the hospital. I think the NHS staff are fantastic. But the heat is pretty unbearable and I don’t think that’s fair for patients, relatives or staff.

“A nurse told us the air con wouldn’t work while the door was open but I’m pretty sure it isn’t working anyway.

“Another nurse told us she didn’t think the sensors on the door were working. We tried closing the door but we had to open it again to let air through the room.”

The woman took in her own temperature gauge to compare it to that in the ward. Both recorded 26C.

She said: “There’s a lot right with the hospital but there is a lot wrong with it too. The other day there were five people in the room discussing my relative’s needs and the sweat was dripping off my back.”

The Record first reported on the issue of hot wards in 2015 when an insider told how patients were bringing in their own fans.

A Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board spokesman said: “The building management system has been assessed again today and shows temperatures to be ranging between 21C and 24C which is classed as acceptable.

“The temperature can be altered in the room and doors should be kept closed to allow the chilled beam to cool the air in the room and not draw in warm air from the corridor.”
