There wasn’t much to love about the Bears offense in their 24-14 loss to the Packers. But one of the lone bright spots was the performance of rookie running back Khalil Herbert, who looks primed to become the next late-round gem by Ryan Pace.
With David Montgomery on injured reserve and Damien Williams on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Herbert saw a bulk of the action at running back on Sunday.
Herbert had 19 rushes for 97 yards, averaging 5.1 yards per carry, and scored his first career NFL touchdown. He had zero negative gains on the afternoon, and he showcased his vision and power on some impressive runs.
“I really liked the way that he ran the football,” said coach Matt Nagy. “It was just like last week; when he makes the one cut and sticks that left or right foot in the ground he gets vertical … We need him right now.”
“It’s not surprising,” added quarterback Justin Fields. “We know how talented he is and we know what he brings to this offense. He’s a power back. He has great instincts on running the ball and juking moves. He’s a great player.”

With Montgomery sidelined at least another week with a knee sprain and the uncertainty surrounding Williams’ return, get ready for more Herbert against the Buccaneers next Sunday.
