Rookie firefighter saves dog from drowning in first rescue

A newly recruited firefighter has been recognised for rescuing a dog after it got into trouble in a Dublin river.

The novice fireman, named only as Sean, managed to pluck the dog, Lemon, out of the water after it got stuck in rough conditions in the River Dodder and had to be hauled back to dry land.

Dublin Fire Brigade tweeted about the incident and shared a picture of Sean with the soaking-wet pup.

"Recruit Firefighter Sean had his first water rescue this weekend after receiving a call for help on the River Dodder," the brigade wrote in a tweet at 9:51pm on Sunday (October 23).

"Lemon the dog had gotten stuck in a ruff patch and needed assistance to get back to dry land. Both are now friends fur-ever."

One person replied to the tweet with a quip about Sean's unusual first outing on the job.

"We all have to start somewhere Sean," he wrote, accompanied by a laughing emoji.

Another simply added: "What a lucky Lemon."
