Rooftop stand-off man who 'asked for girlfriend' is arrested after three-hour ordeal

A man who climbed on to a roof and reportedly asked to speak to his girlfriend remained in custody this morning after a three-hour standoff.

The incident led to South Road in Waterloo being closed by officers at around 9pm yesterday.

The man, believed to be in his 40s was spoken to by  specially trained negotiators  who arrived at the scene shortly after police.

Witnesses in the area claimed that the man asked police to speak to his girlfriend, and also asked for a lighter.

Pictures taken at the scene show the man lying across the roof tiles and straddling the top of the building.

In one video he is even seen dangerously walking across the roof as police look up at him from below.

A spokesperson for  Merseyside Police  said that just before 9pm, a call was received of a man in his 40s on a roof in South Road and officers and specially trained negotiators were sent to the scene.

A spokeswoman confirmed just after midnight that the man was "safely down".
