Roof cut off by firefighters as two car crash closes major city road

The roof of a car was cut off after a dramatic crash closed a major road through the city.

Emergency services were called to Smithdown Road, close to the cemetery, shortly before 6pm to reports of a two car smash.

It was believed that people had become trapped trapped in one of the cars leading fire crews to cut off the roof.

Dramatic images taken at the scene also show extreme damage to both cars that were left blocking the road after the crash.

One of the cars involved ended up on the footpath close to a bus stop but thankfully no one was seriously injured in the incident.

Road closures were quickly put in place on the road between Webster Road and Tunstall Street near Princes Park.

Officers are currently still at the scene and closures are expected to remain in place throughout the evening until both cars can be recovered.

Travel site INRIX posted an update about the crash and road closures.

It said: "A562 Smithdown Road in both directions closed due to accident between Webster Road ( Wavertree ) and Tunstall Street (Princes Park).

"Traffic is coping well.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the ECHO : "Officers are currently in attendance at the scene of a road traffic collision on Smithdown Road.

"Initial reports suggested that people had become trapped inside one of the vehicles.

"No one involved was seriously injured and recovery will now take place.

"Road closures are in effect at the scene."
