Roof collapse fears delay investigation into Newcastle rug store fire

A Fire and Rescue NSW investigator sent to Newcastle to look into a blaze that tore through a Parry Street rug store is unlikely to be able to get inside the scorched building until later this week because of fears more parts of the roof may collapse.

The Rahmani's Rug Gallery building caught fire about 11.30pm on Monday, with the inferno next to one of the main streets into Newcastle CBD causing the roof of the premises to partially cave-in.

The Newcastle Herald understands efforts are underway to prop-up some of the walls supporting the remainder of the roof in order to make it safe for the fire investigator to go inside and look for clues as to the cause of the blaze.

Police said earlier this week the fire was not being treated as suspicious.

The Herald understands a possible electrical fault is being considered among a range of possible causes of the fire.

Rahmani's Rug Gallery opened in Newcastle 35 years ago.
