Former Manchester United defender Ronny Johnsen believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will do enough to earn the manager’s job at Old Trafford on a permanent basis.

United will appoint a caretaker manager until the end of the season following Jose Mourinho’s dismissal on Monday with Solskjaer being strongly considered for that role.

Johnsen, who spent six years at Old Trafford after the joining the club the same year as fellow Norwegian Solskjaer, believes his old teammate is the ideal candidate to lift the club from their current malaise.

Not only that, he believes the hero of 1999 will leave the United hierarchy with a difficult decision to make at the end of the season.

"If Ole Gunnar gets this job, they may not need to look for a new manager for the next season,” Johnsen told Norway’s VG.

“If he starts getting to these players, why can he not he lead the team anymore? It will be exciting to see."

Mourinho was given his marching orders on Tuesday morning following Sunday's defeat to Liverpool.
