Ronny Deila completes post Celtic redemption as New York City are crowned MLS champions

Former Celtic manager Ronny Deila has won the MLS Cup Final on penalties, seeing off Portland Timbers in their own back yard.

The Norwegian boss has taken his New York City side all the way in his first title since leaving Parkhead in 2016.

Valentin Castellanos' goal four minutes before half-time in the American season finale looked like it was going to prove the difference - until Felipe Mora netted an equaliser with seconds left.

Extra time wouldn't separate the sides so it was decided from 12 yards with New York keeper Sean Johnson the hero after denying Mora and Diego Valeri in Timbers' first two penalties before Alexander Callens smashed home the winning kick.

The club, owned by Manchester City's City Football Group, had not even won their regional Eastern Conference before this year when they saw off Philadelphia Union - with Deila pictured drinking from the trophy after the match.

Deila has surpassed all expectations as he rebounds spectacularly Stateside from leaving Celtic five years ago.

He was replaced by Brendan Rodgers and the Hoops didn't look back as they embarked on four Treble-winning campaigns though the fabled 10 In A Row was a bridge too far.

Deila meanwhile moved back to his native Norway with Valerenga before heading to the Big Apple in January 2020, having to contend with the stuttering effects of covid on the season within weeks.

But heroic keeper Johnson has delivered him a new career highlight.
