Ronnie Wood: Chuck Berry gigs were torture

Ronnie Wood says his hero Chuck Berry was one of the most annoying musicians to tour with.

The Rolling Stones guitarist revealed Berry, who died aged 90 last year, was “too hard to deal with because he had a chip on his shoulder about everyone stealing his riffs”.

He said: “Chuck had his own originality which was so fantastic. But he would never tune up, which was so annoying.

And he kept playing [novelty song] My Ding-A-Ling at live shows. You would go, ‘Chuck, you can’t keep playing that’, and he would say, ‘It was number one for f***’s sake!’

He added: “He would have these red bell-bottomed trousers on and he would say, ‘Ronnie, don’t tell anyone but I’ve been wearing these same pants for 17 years, ok?’

"And I would say, ‘Chuck, I think everybody knows that!’ ”

Wood, 71, was unveiling compilation album Confessin’ The Blues at The Blues Kitchen, Shoreditch, last night.
