Ronnie Whelan criticised over Christian Eriksen comments during Denmark's clash with Belgium

RTE commentator Ronnie Whelan has been criticised over comments he made about Christian Eriksen on commentary during Denmark's 2-1 loss to Belgium this evening.

The former Ireland international was calling the game, which included a powerful minute's applause in the tenth minute, honouring Denmark star Christian Eriksen after suffered a cardiac arrest last Saturday.

Speaking during the moment, Whelan suggested the Inter Milan midfielder wouldn't have wanted such a fuss as he watched on from Rigshospitalet hospital just over a kilometre away.

However, the former Liverpool legend has been slammed by some viewers after appearing to say that there was 'no real need' for the applause and that 'he's OK'.

"I'm sure he'll be saying there's no real need for this", Whelan said.

"I think he's that sort of a fella.

"I'm sure he's happy, but there's no real need for it now, isn't it? Everything's alright, he's OK, Let's get on with the football again."

In an emotionally charged evening in Copenhagen, Denmark sensationally took the lead inside two minutes after a Yousuf Poulsen strike as they took the game to Belgium.

But as their energy levels dropped in the second-half, substitute Kevin de Bruyne pulled the strings to assist Thorgan Hazard for an equaliser before he struck himself as the visitors took all three points.

Earlier today, it was revealed that Eriksen requires an implantable cardioverter defibrillator fitted after his collapse during their 1-0 loss to Finland last weekend.
