Rondon set to be 'available' on a free transfer but Benitez could deny 'perfect' Newcastle return

Former Newcastle United striker Salomon Rondon could be available on a free transfer this summer.

The Venezuelan international might be the latest Chinese Super League star to have his contract cut short, according to the Sun.

Financial troubles brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic has led to talk of Dalian Pro considering releasing the 31-year-old from his current deal.

Former Barcelona and Tottenham midfielder Paulinho and Leo Baptistao are among the Super League's foreign stars to already be released this summer.

The report claims a number of Premier League clubs are monitoring Rondon's situation following his successful spells with the Magpies and West Brom.

Rondon enjoyed a productive season-long loan spell as United's number nine in the 2018/19 campaign before reuniting with former boss Rafa Benitez at Dalian Pro.

The striker has spoken fondly about his time at the club since, describing St James' Park as his 'jungle' and insisting he would welcome a return after describing his time at the club as 'perfect'.

It would be a move that would likely be welcomed by large sections of United's fanbase, with the summer departures of Andy Carroll and Yoshinori Muto leaving Steve Bruce's side light up front.

However, the Sun report Benitez is among those interested in a deal for the Venezuelan striker. The title claim the new Toffees boss is 'watching with interest' and is keen to 'add firepower' at Goodison Park.
