Ronan Keating 'overjoyed' as he wins ‘substantial damages’ in settlement over phone-hacking

Ronan Keating has accepted "substantial" damages from News Group Newspapers (NGN) over the phone hacking of his voicemails.

The Irish singer and presenter brought legal action against the company in April 2020, claiming his voicemail messages had been intercepted by NGN journalists.

At a hearing in London on Monday, the High Court heard that the singer had identified a number of "suspicious" articles published between 1996 and 2011 which he said contained his private information.

They also led to him distrusting some of his closest friends, his lawyers added.

News Group Newspapers apologised for the distress caused by "individuals" in relation to the News of the World.

The court heard that Keating, who became a permanent presenter on BBC One’s The One Show in May, had accepted NGN’s offer to settle his claim.

As part of the settlement, NGN has agreed to pay "substantial damages" to the father-of-five, as well as his reasonable legal costs, the Press Association report.

The pay-out amount has not been revealed, but the Magic Radio breakfast and The One Show TV host has said he’s ‘delighted’ to put the matter to bed and move on.

Speaking after the hearing, the singer said: "For many years I was suspicious as to how my private information was being obtained and I am overjoyed that I can now put this episode behind me and move on."
