Ronan Darcy set to make loan move away from Bolton Wanderers to Norwegian club

Bolton Wanderers attacker Ronan Darcy is set to make a loan switch away from Bolton Wanderers to a club in Norway.

The 20-year-old has impressed for Wanderers in the club's pre-season schedule and featured regualrly during the build-up to the League One campaign.

But now Darcy - who played 11 times last season under Ian Evatt - is poised to head to an unnamed Norweigian side for the next few months, with seasons in Norway typically lasting until the end of November due to the cold weather.

Wanderers manager Evatt expects the annoucement to be made within the next day or two.

The deal was originally supposed to be concluded towards the back end of last week, with Darcy flying out to Norway to complete the potential move.

But the club in question which he is moving to failed to apply for a work permit for the Wanderers youngster, and Darcy was not allowed entry and had to head back to the UK.

That work permit has now been applied for and Darcy is set to fly out to Norway shortly to complete the link up with his new side.

But Evatt revealed that Darcy saw the amusing side of the episode and praised the Wanderers youngster for heading out of the UK in a bid to get minutes under his belt.

The Bolton boss said: “I don’t know if you know about the complications with Ronan, but he had a bit of a rough weekend, bless him. It looks like that’s going to be resolved in the next day or two, so fingers crossed.

“He flew out to Norway on Friday and they changed their Covid protocols to a deep red, which what they class the UK, so anyone arriving from the UK has to quarantine, that’s fine and we know that anyway.

“But also if they’re going into employment in Norway, the club needed to apply for a work permit for him. Because the change was so immediate, they didn’t get chance to do it, so basically they rejected his entrance into Norway.

"The poor lad had to spend hours in an airport, fly back and then they’ve now applied for his work permit this morning, so I’m guessing that he’ll be back out on a flight either later today or tomorrow morning.

“I spoke to him over the weekend and he was in good spirits, he saw the funny side which is great. It is a valuable learning experience and I must give him huge amounts of credit for a) having the appetite to go and play abroad and test himself, but b) having gone through that to still want to do it, fair play to him.”
