Cristiano Ronaldo's mother reveals what he shared with her days before he signed for Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo was always going to return to Manchester United in the summer, according to his mother.

Ronaldo and his mum Dolores Aveiro share a very close connection, she was seen shedding a tear when he scored on his second debut against Newcastle United earlier this month.

Speculation was rife during the closing days of the summer transfer window that Ronaldo was joining rivals Manchester City after coming to the conclusion his future was away from Juventus.

As it transpired, with a little help from former United defender Rio Ferdinand and another club legends, the 36-year-old re-joined the side he left 12 years ago and has been in world-class form since his return.

Four goals in three games has seen United currently joint-top in the Premier League and have been tipped to lift the title for the first time since legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson led the team to glory in his final season in charge in 2013.

Despite scoring 12 goals in five games, City’s attack has lacked a focal point and it’s easy to understand why the club were linked to one of the football’s most clinical strikers.

But they were just links, with Aveiro putting to bed any truth to the reports Ronaldo was set to sign for the blue half of Manchester.

“On television, they talked about Manchester City, but [Ronaldo] said to me: ‘Mum, don’t worry about what they say, because I’m going to Manchester United,’ Aveiro said, via Tutto Sport ).

“Seeing the stadium full, with 75,000 people, chanting his name was a great emotion.”

Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford has seen him top the league’s goalscoring charts despite missing the first two games of the season. His goal against West Ham last weekend took him to 122 goals for the Reds over the course of two spells with the club.
