Ronaldo names the best he has played with and four players who inspired him

Brazilian legend Ronaldo has named the best he has player he has ever played with, as well as four idols he had growing up.

Former striker Ronaldo won almost everything there is to claim in both club and international football.

The 44-year-old, who is now president of La Liga club Real Valladolid, is widely regarded as one of the best forwards of all-time.

So perhaps unsurprisingly, when asked who the best player he has ever played with, Ronaldo pointed the finger at a midfielder in Zinedine Zidane, who of course has become one of the most decorated managers of all-time too at Real Madrid.

"Zizou has been the best player I have trained and played with,” he told France Football. “And now he has become a coach and won three Champions Leagues in a row.

“That is why today I ask myself: ‘Who is better, Zidane the player or Zidane the coach? But I can’t answer".

Many recent strikers have revealed that Ronaldo was their inspiration growing up.

And the two-time Ballon d'Or winner has revealed the range of players he looked up to as a child, growing up in the 1980’s.

“Marco Van Basten for sure,” Ronaldo went on. “From a very young age I watched Italian football and paid special attention to this player.

“Maradona and Cruyff, too. And Zico, of course, because he played for Flamengo and I was a fan of that team.

“I tried to take something from all of them and ultimately I can say that I am proud of the career I have had.”

Ronaldo was speaking to France Football after being nominated as the Ballon d’Or Dream Team’s centre-forward.

And he admits that while he could have had a career playing second fiddle in attack, he always saw himself as the main man up front.

Ronaldo added: “Sometimes I played as a second striker, but I always saw myself up top in the centre. It was like that.

“Maybe I could have played in the ‘10’ position, but I always preferred to be close to the box, where I knew I was the most dangerous. I was so in love with my position as a number 9.”
