'Ronaldo lucky to stay on the pitch' - Republic of Ireland fans fume over penalty incident

Republic of Ireland fans are adamant that Cristiano Ronaldo should have been sent off after Portugal won a penalty against the Boys in Green.

Ronaldo appeared to strike out at Dara O'Shea as he waited to take the penalty, which was brilliantly saved by 19-year-old Gavin Bazunu.

Ireland’s hopes of springing a shock appeared to have been dealt a blow within 10 minutes when Hendrick tripped Fernandes as he tried to retrieve an under-hit pass inside his own penalty area and Slovenian referee Matej Jug pointed to the spot.

After a lengthy VAR check, Jug stuck to his initial decision – but Bazunu dived full length to his right to stop Ronaldo’s penalty.

But fans were unhappy with the penalty being awarded and the decision not to check the Ronaldo/ O'Shea incident with VAR.

And to compound their misery, Ronaldo scored twice in the dying minutes to earn Portugal a late, late 2-1 victory.

One fan tweeted: "No penalty and Ronaldo should be sent off!! Var not even checking it either."

Another comment read: "Hendrick for it the ball and Ronaldo threw his hand at O’Shea’s face. That penalty should be overturned and Ronaldo could easily be sent off. But obviously it’s Ronaldo so that won’t happen."

One other person said: "That’s not a peno and Ronaldo has to be sent off."

Someone else commented: "Why has @Cristiano not been sent off? Madness."
