Ronald McDonald House to expand after it gets $100 million, its largest single donation ever, from AbbVie

Ronald McDonald House Charities has received its largest single donation ever: $100 million from North Chicago-based drugmaker AbbVie.

Ronald McDonald House, headquartered in Chicago, provides temporary housing for families of hospitalized children across the country, among other services. The donation from AbbVie will be used to build more than 600 new guest rooms at 32 Ronald McDonald Houses in at least 26 states.

Eight new rooms will be added to the Oak Lawn, Ill., Ronald McDonald House, and a new 20-room house is being built in Peoria, Ill.

The new rooms will mean about 230,000 additional night stays for patients and their families each year. The money also will go toward meals, groceries, laundry services, parking, classrooms and playrooms.

AbbVie is a biopharmaceutical company that focuses on immunology, oncology, virology and neuroscience, and its top-selling drug is Humira, an injection used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases.
