Ronald Koeman sacked by Barcelona after Rayo Vallecano defeat

Former Everton manager Ronald Koeman has been sacked by Barcelona.

The Catalan giants confirmed in a statement they had parted ways with the Dutchman, bringing an end to his 14-month spell in charge at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona currently sit in ninth in La Liga after a disastrous couple of months and the final straw for their decision-makers came on Wednesday after they suffered an embarrassing 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano.

The defeat came three days on from a home loss to Real Madrid - manager by former Everton coach Carlo Ancelotti - at the Camp Nou.

Following that setback, Barcelona fans attacked Koeman 's car as he drove it away from the Camp Nou.

While crippling financial problems saw the Blaugrana part ways with club icon Lionel Messi in the summer along with other big names like Antoine Griezmann, few anticipated the team's decline to be quite so steep.

Barcelona will have to pay out a severance fee to Koeman, as he had signed a two-year deal, although they clearly felt as though they had no option but to part ways with their former defender.

Koeman's last job in club management was at Everton, where he also lasted just over a season.

He steered Everton to seventh in his first campaign in charge, although he was axed early in 2017-18 after the team sagged into the relegation zone.
