Ronald Koeman: Netherlands boss undergoes heart procedure after suffering chest pains

Former Southampton and Everton boss and current Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has been admitted to hospital in Amsterdam with heart problems.

Koeman's wife Bartina and manager Rob Jansen both confirmed to Dutch publication De Telegraaf that the 57-year-old underwent a cardiac catheterisation procedure on Sunday to clear a blocked coronary artery after being transported to hospital by ambulance.

Former Barcelona star Koeman - whose managerial career has also taken in spells at Ajax, Benfica, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord - is said to be in a stable condition and is expected to leave hospital on Monday.

In a statement, the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) said: "Ronald Koeman was hospitalised on Sunday evening after chest complaints.

"The 57-year-old national team coach of the Dutch national team has undergone a successful cardiac catheterisation and will return home tomorrow.

"We wish Ronald a lot of strength and improvement."

The Dutch national team's official Twitter account later tweeted: "That is a shock. Fortunately things are going better again. Much strength and improvement, coach."

Koeman managed at Everton between 2016-17 and the club tweeted on Sunday: "Everyone at #EFC would like to wish former boss @RonaldKoeman a speedy recovery."

He also received well wishes from Barcelona, who wrote: "From FC Barcelona, we wish Barça legend, @RonaldKoemana rapid and full recovery. Keep your spirits up!"

Several of Koeman's former and current players also sent messages, with Liverpool and Netherlands midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum and Everton's Morgan Schneiderlin among them.

Everton winger Yannick Bolasie, currently on loan at Sporting Lisbon, said: "Stay strong Legend. [I] can never forget the opportunity you gave me & the faith you showed in me."
