Ronald de Boer reveals bamboozling Jimmy Bell introduction as Rangers hero pinpoints Ibrox 'smell the football' attraction

Ronald de Boer has revealed his confusion upon being welcomed to Rangers by kitman Jimmy Bell.

The Dutchman arrived at Ibrox in 2000, and went on to make 129 appearances for the club.

He was one of the most of the most high-profile signings of the Dick Advocaat era, and quickly took to life in Glasgow.

Speaking in Sports Mail, he said: "When I came to Rangers, I went to get my tracksuit and stuff.

"Jimmy Bell said three things to me. I said yes to all of them. I didn't have a clue what he was saying.

He continued: "Rangers was a big name. It had the history.

"The first time I arrived at Ibrox, I appreciated that this was a football stadium.

"It was not state of the art. The dressing room was all wooden walls, the Queen's picture was there as you walked in, but you could smell the football. I loved it from the first moment."

The Champions League winner struggled to make an impact in his first season and seemed to struggle under the weight of expectation associated with an arrival from Barcelona.

But he slowly adapted to the hurley-burley of Scottish football and was a key player under Alex McLeish in both his second and third year at the club.

He said: "There were ups and downs — I had problems with my knee — but in the third year everything fell together and we won the Treble."

Recalling his Old Firm debut in November 2000, when Rangers won 5-1 at Ibrox, de Boer said: "You won't always experience this kind of rivalry, this kind of ambience.

"You just think: 'Wow'. There were some Scottish guys at Celtic and Rangers and the legs were flying around, the referee was just saying play on, play on.

"In the Netherlands or Spain, there would have been three players sent off almost immediately. It was strange, a bit crazy, but on the other hand it was like yeah, just go on with the battle."
