Ron Rivera thinks Panthers have ‘a good chance’ to sign Gerald McCoy

The Panthers are anxiously waiting to hear the decision of former Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, along with a few other teams. The free agent superstar visited with Carolina last week as well as the Browns and the Ravens. He reportedly took the weekend to make a decision as to where he will sign.

The front office sounds hopeful about the prospect of adding McCoy. Coach Ron Rivera told reporters after this morning’s OTAs practice that he thinks the Panthers have a good chance to sign him. However, he admitted that the other teams involved probably feel the same way.

McCoy would no doubt give a big boost to Carolina’s defensive line. However, signing him won’t come cheap.

For what it’s worth, the team cleared about $9.25 million in cap room this week by releasing Matt Kalil and getting Torrey Smith to agree to a pay cut. That’s the same amount that Ndamukong Suh just signed for with the Bucs to replace McCoy.
