In his third NFL season, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has a career record of 8-19. Not too impressive.
However, in his four career starts against the Washington Football Team, Jones has a perfect 4-0 record.
Jones has completed 62% of his passes for 6,237 yards, with 36 touchdowns and 22 interceptions for his career. Against Washington, Jones has completed 68% of his passes for 901 yards, with eight touchdowns and three interceptions.
A big reason for Jones’ success against Washington is his ability to get outside of the pocket and make plays with his legs. These types of quarterbacks have given Washington problems in recent years, and Jones is no exception.
After Tuesday’s practice, Washington coach Ron Rivera discussed Jones’ record against Washington and why he’s been so successful ahead of Thursday night’s Week 2 game against the Giants per Bijan Todd of NBC Sports Washington.
“He runs well with the ball,” Rivera said. “He’s a dynamic runner. He’s a quarterback that can take advantage of that.”
So, what does Washington need to do to limit Jones’ effectiveness?
“[Jones has] a good arm, a strong-arm quarterback who throws the ball. We’ve got to keep him contained to keep him in the pocket,” Rivera said.
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had the mobility to escape the pocket and make plays with his legs. Instead, he chose to stay in the pocket and destroy Washington’s defense in the intermediate passing game.
Washington’s defense can’t afford another performance against the Giants as it had in Week 1 against the Chargers.
Forcing Jones into turnovers shouldn’t be too difficult as the third-year passer has 40 career turnovers.
