Ron Rivera says Will Grier is going to help the Panthers ‘some day’

The Panthers got a lot of hype for their picks in the 2019 NFL draft. It takes time for most rookies to adjust to life in the pros, though. So far only first-round pick Brian Burns has truly impressed. It’s entirely too early for anybody to be written off as a bust, but the early returns on third-round pick Will Grier have been pretty disappointing.

Grier’s flawed mechanics were a known commodity coming into the league. More importantly, his processing speed just isn’t quick enough at this point in his development for Grier to compete at this level. Coach Ron Rivera told the media after today’s practice that he is going to help the team “some day.”

That’s what we call damning with faint praise.

Grier has thrown two terrible interceptions so far this preseason and clearly has a lot of work to do. Panthers fans should not expect to see him on the field in 2019.

Rivera was more complimentary talking about his two rookie offensive linemen, Greg Little and Dennis Daley. While he’s glad they’re not being expected to start right away, he’s confident about their future.

As for the rest, seventh-round pick Terry Godwin has flashed as a punt returner if not a receiver. Christian Miller and Jordan Scarlett have had their moments but are unlikely to start or play huge roles this season.
