The Carolina Panthers are doubling down on their faith in Cam Newton, despite an injured throwing shoulder. This offseason there’s been a lot of speculation about the team potentially adding a new, proven backup quarterback in free agency in case Newton has to miss time during the regular season again.
Speaking with the media at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis this morning, coach Ron Rivera put that idea to rest. Rivera told reporters that the Panthers will not look for a quarterback in free agency. However, he did not rule out finding one in the upcoming NFL draft in April.
Despite what Rivera says, there’s still a strong case to make for Carolina signing a free agent QB this year. There are several good fits that are about to hit the market, including Teddy Bridgewater and Tyrod Taylor. There’s also talented wild cards like Colin Kaepernick and Nick Foles and experienced veterans like Ryan Fitzpatrick and Matt Schaub.
By passing on this free agent class, the Panthers are showing a belief Newton will be 100 percent recovered for 2019. That display of faith is understandable, but it also carries no small amount of risk. If Newton winds up sitting out any significant time due to his shoulder, this decision could come back to haunt the organization.
In any case, bringing in a rookie QB to compete for the backup job is essential.
