Ron Rivera: ‘No doubt’ Cam Newton will play vs. Rams in Week 1

When Cam Newton exited the Panthers’ third preseason game early due to a foot injury, there was immediate concern about his chances of playing in Week 1 against the Rams. After he was spotted in a walking boot post-game, those worries grew.

It turns out those concerns were all for naught.

Newton is recovering from his mid-foot sprain well and will be ready for the Panthers’ season opener against the Rams. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he has “no doubt” Newton will be on the field in Charlotte on Sept. 8.

The nature of the injury does create some doubt that perhaps Newton won’t be at full strength when it comes to scrambling and making plays with his legs. Mobility is such an important aspect of his game that even if it’s 90 percent instead of 100, it could impact the Panthers’ game plan.

Regardless, Carolina is a much greater threat to the Rams with Newton out there at 90 percent than Kyle Allen or Will Grier at 100 percent.
