Ron Rivera establishes two goals for a ‘successful season’ in Washington

In a cloud of frustration and resignation on Sunday night, we vexed with Washington head coach Ron Rivera and a few of his decisions throughout the season thus far. It had a lot to do with mixed messaging, and where the team should go from here. Sitting at 1-5 with a fork in the road, the team could continue to push forward and try to compete for an NFC East title, or they could take the easy path and work to grab the No. 1 overall draft pick.

We have our opinion, but what’s more important than that is that we know what Rivera’s opinion is. Washington fans are in need of some brutal honesty, and a clear path for the future. On Monday, Rivera did a bit of work to define what his path will be, laying out a couple of goals for the rest of the season.

We can disagree on which path forward will end up bringing the most long-term success to Washington all we want, but in the end, Rivera is the NFL coach with years of experience, and I’m just some journalist. As long as Rivera is clear about his intentions and his path going forward, I have no problem with what he chooses. If his players buy-in and are happy with the direction of the team, things will start to change over time, and we might see some success out of this squad. We’ve held true to this sentiment since Washington hired the new coach: Trust in Ron Rivera.

We aren’t wavering now, but we just want to be kept in the loop.
