Ron Rivera combine notes on 2019 running backs, D.J. Moore, defensive line play

Here are some more notes from Panthers coach Ron Rivera from his Thursday visit with the media as the NFL Combine begins in Indianapolis.

  • Rivera was asked about the running back class coming in and he said it is important to find a back that will take some pressure off of Christian McCaffrey. “Understanding what Christian did last year, how many reps he played, that’s something that we do have a concern with.”
  • Rivera expressed confidence that Tyler Larsen can step in and take over the center position based on the opportunities he’s had in the past and feels very comfortable with him but he is always looking to find ways to improve the position.
  • Rivera is hoping tight end Ian Thomas takes the next step “in terms of being more consistent player, step to the forefront and be a great complement with Greg Olsen.”
  • On the defensive line, Rivera likes players who can get across the line of scrimmage, recognize run or pass and get to the quarterback. He also really likes to see inside push, along with outside rushers. Rivera also noted how tackle tandems working together plays a role, mentioning how Kawann Short played for five years with Star Lotulelei and is now playing with Dontari Poe, so it took time to develop that relationship.
  • One player Rivera mentioned was Marquis Haynes as someone he likes on the outside. “He’s an outside attack guy.” He also talked about his hopes for other young players on the line, including Efe Obada.
  • When asked if D.J. Moore can be a No. 1 receiver, Rivera made note about how Moore can both be a vertical threat and work underneath the defense.
  • Eric Reid re-signing with the Panthers was important as Rivera now feels he has three DB positions locked in for a few years a long with his starting cornerbacks. Now, the goal is to find someone to play next to Reid. That will depend on where they play Reid, which hasn’t been decided yet.
