Ron Leary happy to be back at right guard on Broncos’ offensive line

Broncos offensive lineman Ron Leary has been bounced back and forth between left guard and right guard during his time in Denver as the team’s coaching staff tried to create a cohesive starting front five.

Leary spent the 2018 season at left guard but that appears set to change in 2019. The Broncos have have second-round draft pick Dalton Risner practicing at left guard with Leary on the right side.

Some pundits have said Leary prefers to play on the left side of the line but the veteran shot down that assumption earlier this month.

“I love right guard,” Leary said after practice on June 5. “I think you all [media members] might have said I wanted to go back to my natural spot at left guard more than me. I wanted to stay at right guard last year. I had made that known to the coaches, but they decided to move back to left.”

Mike Munchak, Denver’s new offensive line coach, has granted Leary’s wish of playing on the right side.

“I’m glad to be at right,” Leary said. “I feel a lot more comfortable at right. I had a great season at right my first year here. I’m excited to be at right. Everything’s good.”

From left to right, the starting offensive line this year will likely be Garett Bolles, Leary, Connor McGovern, Risner and Ja’Wuan James. That unit will look to improve on last year’s total of 34 sacks allowed.
