Ron Gordon wants football alcohol ban axed as Hibs chief offers SPFL review insight

Hibs chief Ron Gordon has revealed that the clubs behind the latest SPFL review are keen on bringing alcohol back to Scottish football stands.

The Easter Road owner has joined forces with chiefs from Aberdeen, Dundee, Dundee United and Hearts to launch a major review of the governing bodies finances and structures.

The Premiership quintet have set Deloitte the ambitious target of coming up with a plan to more than double the SPFL’s current revenue streams from £27millio to £50million a year.

Gordon has stated that in a bid to improve the match day experience for supporters a move towards alcohol sales is being touted.

The ban was initially imposed following a riot at the 1980 Scottish Cup final between Rangers and Celtic after the Parkhead side clinched the trophy.

In 2018, the SFA, Police Scotland and Scottish Government explored the idea of using the Euro 2020 matches at Hampden as a pilot for the introduction but the plan never got off the ground.

In an interview with Hibs TV, the capital club supremo laid out his initial hopes for the review by the global accountancy giants..

He said: "I think one of the key components will be the broadcast side. Ultimately there is a lot of revenue there so we need to make sure that is at an optimum level.

"I would love to see bigger brands, bigger UK brands, get involved in the Scottish game.

"This league is one of the best small leagues in Europe. One of the best, of the most competitive, one of the most passionate for sure, and we don’t tell that story, and I would like us to be, so people say if you want to be in Scotland you want to partner with football.

"We want big brand to think I’m in Scotland, and I need to be there.

"Whatever money we come to is going to trickle down to all the clubs. Hopefully it will make the product on the pitch better, and the game day experience better.

"On structure, I would like to see if there are ways we can organise the league to be more effective. Particularly on the commercial side, but the review is going to look at everything with an open mind. We don’t want to prejudge anything.

"We want to see what other leagues do, the bets leagues in Europe, at sports in the United States; and then on the strategic initiative I think there are several things we can do.

"A development programme, or a U23 or Colt programme so we can create a really sustainable development programme for young players in Scotland.

"Things like government relations. We do it, but I’d love to see what we could do there.

"I know that alcohol is something certainly that the clubs that were in this original group would love to see change.

"I don’t know if we can or not but at least we are going to think about it.

"The whole thing with Deloitte is we want to see actionable items, not this is the problem. I think we all know what some of the problems are. It needs to be prescriptive."
