Ron Gordon reignites contentious SPFL debate as Hibs supremo claims there are too many teams in Scotland

Hibs supremo Ron Gordon claims there are too many teams in Scotland, as he advocates cutting the number to focus only on full-time, professional clubs.

The issue of reconstruction in Scottish football is one that never really goes away, with various plans proposed to alter the structure of the SPFL.

A plan for Rangers and Celtic colt teams to be parachuted into League Two was rejected, with the B teams ultimately accepted to the Lowland League.

SPFL chief Neil Doncaster has previously pushed plans for a 10 team top flight but that was rejected by fans and clubs.

Hearts chief Ann Budge, who has also raised concerns over the number of clubs in the system, attempted to push through reconstruction last summer after the Jambos were relegated when the Premiership season ended early.

Now the Hibs owner has gone on record stating his belief there are too many teams in the country, as he proposed a focus on bigger clubs and claimed revenue would still trickle down the pyramid.

Gordon told The Athletic : "On the structure, in my opinion, we have a lot of teams. We have 42 teams in the SPFL, which is huge for a country of five and a half million people.

“My sense is that somewhere in the middle of that, maybe 24 or something like that…you could still keep the pyramid going, but the focus would be on the full-time, professional clubs that can really grow the game.

“Because ultimately what happens at the top, trickles down to the smaller clubs. So you can still keep all the payments and residuals flowing down.

“But that’s a debate we probably need to have, to see if it makes sense to look at a structure that gives focus to growing the product and the league.”
