Ron Gordon backs £50m SPFL action plan set to push Scottish football in 'new direction'

Scottish Premiership sides have welcomed an action plan that aims for the income of clubs to be increased from £28.4m to £50m by 2029.

SPFL members - Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibernian and Dundee United and Dundee - commissioned an independent review with aims to secure a boost to Scottish football's money pot in the coming years. The deep dive has been carried out by financial experts Deloitte’s in order to undertake a “critical and transparent" review of the SPFL in 2021, with aims to explore strategic actionable steps.

And now Hibs chairman Ron Gordon has publicly welcomed the review on behalf of the member clubs, developing a five-year action plan in a bid to implement the recommendations following overwhelming support from all cinch Premiership sides. Priorities include maximisation of match day broadcasting and improving the image, brand and profile of the SPFL alongside commercial growth throughout in a bid to kick start a '"new era for Scottish football".

The 42 clubs that make up the SPFL shared a total of £28.5million between them last year, but now the aim is to almost double that figure throughout the next seven years. It comes as Sky are currently locked in talks with the SPFL over a new long term Scottish football TV deal worth £150m - £30m per season - despite the current deal still having three years left to run.

Speaking on behalf of the five clubs, Hibs chairman Ron Gordon said: : “We’re very excited about this strategic action plan which sets a new tone and direction for the SPFL and the game in Scotland. The proposed strategic building blocks are designed to grow our clubs, the SPFL, and the men’s and women’s game at every level.

“A more substantial and comprehensive broadcast partnership, a focused and robust commercial structure and team, an investment and commitment to the growth of the women’s game, and the development of our young men’s players are all critical to reaching our aspirational goal of £50 million in revenues.

“Football is Scotland’s passion - we have a dynamic and exciting league with historic clubs and passionate fans. The image and brand of the SPFL should reflect and celebrate the many positives that our clubs and league provide our communities across the country I want to thank Aberdeen, Dundee, Dundee United, Heart and Hibs for their investment in the review, along with Celtic and Rangers for their participation and contributions in curating and refining the actionable recommendations of the study.

“Our thanks also go to the SPFL Board and Executive for their openness, receptivity and leadership in exploring and driving new ideas and opportunities to help advance, promote and grow our clubs, the league and our game.”
