The Lakers may have paired LeBron James with Anthony Davis. They missed out, though, on Kawhi Leonard. They also could not convince Ron Adams to join Frank Vogel's coaching staff.
Adams has decided to stay with the Warriors despite the Lakers' interest in hiring him, a league source confirmed to Bay Area News Group. ESPN first reported the news.
The Warriors did not sense Adams had any desire to leave. But they granted the Lakers permission to interview him shortly after the NBA Finals ended in mid June. Adams is expected to have a revised role under Kerr's staff, but the details are currently unclear. In the previous five seasons, Adams was among one of Kerr's assistant coaches and focused primarily on the team's defensive strategies.
The Warriors valued Adams for his sharp intellect both with basketball and other interests, as well as his ability to relate to people with his honesty and sense of humor. Adams has had numerous assistant-coaching stops in San Antonio (1992-94), Philadelphia (1994-96), Milwaukee (1998-2003), Chicago (2003-08), Oklahoma City (2008-10), Chicago again (2010-13) and Boston (2013-14). He also has had head-coaching stints at Fresno State (1986-90) and his alma mater, Fresno Pacific (1972-75).
Amid that experience, Adams has no aspirations to be an NBA head coach.
