A man was left fighting for his life in hospital after two people were stabbed and three others were injured in east London.

Five men, all aged in their 20s, were injured in Eastern Avenue, Romford, on Tuesday night.

Police and paramedics were scrambled to the scene shortly after 9.45pm and all of those hurt were rushed to hospital.

One of the two men who was stabbed was in a potentially life-threatening condition, Scotland Yard said.

It was later confirmed he is now stable.

Police described the injuries of the second man who was knifed as minor.

It was first believed that four people had been stabbed in the attack, but it was later confirmed only two suffered stab wounds.

Three other victims suffered minor injuries but were not stabbed.

Scotland Yard said a number of arrests have been made but did not say how many.

The attack unfolded near the Collier Row end of the busy road.
