Romeo Beckham playing waiting game after debut for Premier League club delayed

Romeo Beckham’s much anticipated Brentford B debut has been put on hold, Mirror Football understands.

The 20-year-old has been training with the Premier League ’s reserve team who face Crewe Alexandra in a behind-closed-doors match on Saturday. Beckham is contracted to Inter Miami reserves, the MLS franchise his father David owns, but is back in London after his season ended.

He was expected to feature in the friendly this weekend, but his Bees bow is now said to have been delayed, although it should still happen sooner rather than later.

Romeo, along with elder brother Brooklyn, 23, and younger sibling Cruz, 17, had all looked to follow in David’s footsteps, joining Arsenal in 2014. Both Brooklyn and Cruz have put a pause on their own footballing careers, while Romeo almost did the same after being released by the Gunners.

However, he has since turned out for Miami’s reserves and made 26 appearances last season, scoring twice. He was also given a run out for the first team, during a marquee friendly against Barcelona in the summer.

"First full season was full of ups and downs," he wrote on Instagram at the end of the domestic season. "Not the ending we as a team wanted but only lessons learned to take into next year. Love this team and the journey we are on."

Romeo describes himself as “a pretty quick attacking player” and suggested he’s a chip off the old block by saying “I’m at my best when playing wide and getting crosses in.”

He told PUMA: I love taking set pieces too, which I’ve been practicing a lot in the off-season. I’m pretty quiet on the pitch and like my football to do the talking really.

"I’ve grown up around football, so it was always a big interest for me and when I started playing more seriously it became a goal. I played other sports too but decided football was the route I wanted to go down.”

Brentford’s B team do not play in a competitive league and were founded following the closure of their academy in 2016. That allows them greater flexibility when it comes to not only arranging fixtures, but the players they can name in the line up. It is believed Romeo isn’t on trial in an official capacity but will hope to be given a chance to impress the club’s talent spotters in the near future.
