The Bell Shakespeare 2016 season starts with a classic, directed by the company’s artistic director Peter Evans. He intentionally chose to stage the famous romantic tragedy for his first season at the helm. “One of Shakespeare’s greatest virtues is that he allows us to wear our emotion on our sleeve,” Evans said.
Romeo and Juliet tells the story of the star-crossed lovers caught up in an unending feud between their two families. Alex Williams and Kelly Paterniti play Romeo and Juliet, and are joined by Michael Gupta, Angie Milliken, Tom Stokes, Damien Strouthos and Jacob Warner.
Verona is reimagined for this modern production to see Shakespeare’s timeless poetry “pierce through modern manners,” Evans said. With lavish costumes and set designed by Anna Cordingley, it makes a distinct nod to the medieval world.
