Romelu Lukaku to set his own milestone after Cristiano Ronaldo's record-breaking week

Romelu Lukaku is set to make his 100th appearance for Belgium tonight but has another special target to hit tonight. They come up against the Czech Republic at home at King Baudouin Stadium, kick-off at 19:45.

Before we get to the other milestone, I just want to have a quick look back on his 99 caps to get to this point. He got named in the Belgium senior squad in March 2010, given his senior debut against Croatia. His first senior Belgium goal didn't come till his eighth appearance for them when he got a brace in a 2-0 win over Russia in November 2010.

In June 2018, Lukaku officially became Belgium's all-time leading scorer with 31 goals, after scoring in a 3–0 win over Egypt, going ahead of previous record goalscorers, Bernard Voorhoof and Paul Van Himst.

On October 10, 2019, Lukaku scored his 50th and 51st international goals in a 9–0 home win over San Marino.

In Belgium's first international match of this September break, Belgium went 1-0 down against Estonia in the first minute but that wasn't a reason to worry for this squad and they scored five unanswered goals to triumph 5-1. Lukaku got himself a brace before being substituted and most likely rested for this match tonight.

The goalscoring record Lukaku has got for Belgium is fantastic but something to highlight just before his 100th appearance for the senior side. He's scored 66 goals for Belgium in 99 appearances which works out as an average of two goals every three games.

Lukaku started his international career slowly, scoring 17 goals in his first 50 caps. In the last 49 appearances for Belgium, he's got 49 goals. He will be looking to get 50 goals out of 50 appearances tonight. He's started 74, substituted on 25 times over the last 11 years to get to this milestone. A crazy stat is in the 99 appearances, he's only played the whole match in 27 of them. He's usually substituted for Michy Batshuayi or Christian Benteke.

Lukaku is at the level now where he will go into any game against any player and think he can score. I don't expect tonight will be any different for him.

While on that subject, Cristiano Ronaldo has been setting his own new records during the international break. He scored two late headers as Portugal secured a 2-1 win against the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday night, which saw Ronaldo become the all-time leading goalscorer in men's international football with 111 goals. Is this week going to be the one Lukaku gets in the headlines with his milestone?
