Romelu Lukaku set for Chelsea future talks with club-record signing eager for Inter Milan return

Romelu Lukaku is keen to return to Inter Milan after a nightmare first season at Chelsea.

Lukaku returned to Stamford Bridge from Inter last summer for a club-record fee of £97.5million, but finished the campaign with just eight Premier League goals.

The Belgian faces an uncertain future at Chelsea and is due to hold talks with the club about his role next season. Lukaku has made no secret of his love for Inter in the past and scored 64 goals during two seasons at the club, winning the Serie A title.

A move back to the San Siro would be complicated, however, given the finances involved in any deal. New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is also unlikely to want to take a hit on Lukaku, who would be unable to command the same sort of fee he cost a year ago. The 29-year-old’s significant wages would be equally problematic for Inter.

Lukaku’s future had been put on hold while the Chelsea takeover process took place, but now a resolution can be found. The possibility of a loan has been mooted, but if Lukaku were to leave, Chelsea would have to find a replacement first.

Kai Havertz led the line for the Blues repeatedly last season but manager Thomas Tuchel would want a striker to come in if Lukaku were to depart.
