Romelu Lukaku joined Inter Milan because he was 'bored' at Manchester United

Roberto Martinez has suggested Romelu Lukaku left Manchester United because he needed a new challenge.

Lukaku secured a move to Inter Milan at the beginning of August after a transfer saga that at one point looked like it could end up with the player joining Juventus.

Speaking ahead of Belgium's upcoming fixtures against San Marino and Scotland, Martinez said he is pleased to see Lukaku enjoying his football again.

"Romelu needed a new challenge. Sometimes you get bored of a club," Martinez told VTM, cited by F365.

"Working with [manager Antonio] Conte will please him and the project of Inter, which is to aim for the title, is interesting. I see Lukaku smiling again and that makes me happy."

Lukaku made his competitive debut for Inter on Monday night and scored a 4-0 victory over newly promoted Lecce.

Speaking in a podcast that was uploaded last week, Lukaku revealed he ultimately decided to leave United because he felt unprotected by the club.

"A lot of stuff has been said where I didn't feel protected," Lukaku told the LightHarted Podcast.

"I felt like a lot of rumours, 'Rom going there', 'they don't want Rom', and nobody came out to shut it down.

"It was for a good three, four weeks. I'm waiting for someone to come out and shut it down. It didn't happen.

"I had my conversation, told them it was better to go our separate ways. If you don't want to protect somebody, all these rumours come out. I just wanted you to say 'Rom is going to fight for his place', but it never happened for four, five months."
