Romelu Lukaku insists Manchester United 'had a really good season' despite finishing it without a trophy.
United's season came to an abrupt end last Sunday night as they crashed out of the Europa League against Sevilla, costing them a place in the final against Lukaku's current side Inter Milan.
The Belgian forward was sold by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last summer after only two seasons with the club but has enjoyed a remarkable scoring campaign in Italy.
Lukaku netted twice on Monday night taking his tally to 33 goals in 50 appearances this season as Antonio Conte's side secured a place in the Europa League final with a 5-0 thumping of Shakhtar.
In a dream scenario Lukaku, along with Ashley Young and Alexis Sanchez, would have been facing United in the European final later this week but instead they take on a very experienced Sevilla side.
Speaking after the match Lukaku was asked if he watched United's semi-final defeat over the weekend, and he explained why his former side still have plenty of reason to smile.
"United tried their hardest," Lukaku told BT Sport when asked about their Europa League exit. "I think they had a really good season.
"I think Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) did a really good job. The players, they did really well. Greenwood coming through, Martial and Rashford – I expected all of that. I’m really happy for them. They look really good for next season, I have no doubt."
