Romelu Lukaku fuels speculation over Manchester United future after responding to transfer rumours

Romelu Lukaku has fuelled speculation over his Manchester United future by claiming he 'doesn't know' if he'll still be at Old Trafford next season.

The Belgian striker has gradually forced his way into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans this season, starting 14 of the last 20 games for United.

He played the full 90 minutes against Chelsea on Sunday but after the game his fitness came under the spotlight, with Gary Neville claiming he looks "unfit" and that United have a "big decision" to make on him this summer.

Lukaku's agent Federico Pastorello set the ball rolling on rumours over his client's future earlier this month when he suggested he might fancy a move abroad.

“He sees a way to have a career playing in different countries because he would like to win some trophies and prove himself and say to his children: ‘I won there and I won there and I won there’ and ‘I was a very good player in all the top championships’," Pastorello said.

"So let’s see, the future is really very open but, at the moment, we don’t discuss about that because really the season is in a big moment."

Solskjaer has already said he plans to start his United "rebuild" this summer, but he also intends to shed some players from his squad.

The futures of David De Gea and Paul Pogba remain uncertain as they stall over new deals, and now Lukaku has thrown more doubt over his own Old Trafford career.

Asked after the draw with Chelsea if he would be staying at the club, he said: "I don’t know, I am not here to entertain rumours. I am still under contract."

Since Solskjaer took over from Jose Mourinho in December he has attempted to increase the intensity in United's play, but has been held back by the lack of fitness in his squad, a complaint he has made regularly of late.

Lukaku admitted the style had changed under the Norwegian, but preferred to focus on the positives from the 1-1 draw with Chelsea and insisted United's top four hopes remained alive.

“It is a different playing style now. There is more intensity and you have to be physically prepared," the 25-year-old said.

"I just look at the positive things. We dominated the game and we deserved to win but it wasn’t meant to be. Now we have to get six points."

Improving the fitness of the squad will be one of Solskjaer's major aims this summer and, whether Lukaku remains around to bear the fruit of that or not, he is confident United will be better for a pre-season under their new manager.

“We will be much better. It is not easy changing a manager in the middle of a season. Next year we will be up there," he said.
