Romelu Lukaku could be hit with double punishment and miss Chelsea vs Liverpool

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel looks set to drop Romelu Lukaku for today's clash with Liverpool.

Tuchel and Lukaku held talks after the Belgian’s controversial comments regarding being unhappy at the club surfaced last week.

It has even been suggested by sources that the 28-year-old may not be included in the matchday squad for the visit of Jurgen Klopp's side to Stamford Bridge.

And in a potential double punishment, the Telegraph claims: "Lukaku could also face a fine for giving an unauthorised interview and the club’s record signing was barely visible on a New Year message Chelsea released on social media."

Lukaku has scored seven goals for Chelsea this season, including two in his last two games.

However, the club’s record signing could still find himself in hot water; after revealing in an interview with Sky Italy that he wasn’t happy with where tactics under Tuchel had left him.

The pair have reportedly spoken since his explosive comments surfaced, but it remains unclear if the former Paris-Saint Germain boss will leave Lukaku out of his starting XI or squad for the pivotal clash with the Reds .

The Athletic claimed this morning that the Belgian is now likely to be "left out of Chelsea’s squad" entirely.

Manchester City extended their points advantage to 11 at the top of the Premier League table following their 2-1 win at Arsenal on Saturday, meaning Liverpool and Chelsea will be even more desperate to win on Sunday to remain within striking distance of Pep Guardiola’s side.

Klopp won't travel with the Reds to west London after returning a suspected positive Covid test.
