Romelu Lukaku: Belgium defeat to England was a game we might never lose again

Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku was left bemused by his side’s Nations League defeat to England at Wembley on Sunday, claiming it was a game they “might never lose again”.

The Belgians were well on top during the first half and took the lead when Lukaku scored from the penalty spot having been fouled by Eric Dier.

However, England equalised against the run of play before the break courtesy of a soft penalty, Thomas Meunier adjudged to have fouled Jordan Henderson at a corner, with Marcus Rashford rifling home from 12 yards.

The second half was a much more even affair but it still took a huge slice of luck for England to score the winner, Mason Mount’s shot taking a wicked deflection off Toby Alderweireld which looped over goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and into the far corner of the net.

"We conceded two goals that on other nights we may not concede, and lose a game we might never lose again," Lukaku told VTM.

"If we were leading 3-0 after the first half, nobody would have said anything."

The result sees England go a point clear at the top of the Nations League group, though next month’s return fixture in Brussels still looks likely to be a decider.
