Two children among seven killed in Romanian guesthouse fire

A massive fire at a guesthouse in Romania has left seven people dead, including two children, authorities have said.

Emergency services were sent to the blaze in the village of Tohani in Prahova county, around 60 miles east of Bucharest, on Tuesday.

The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations said 26 people were staying at the Ferma Dacilor guesthouse at the time.

They added that the blaze had been extinguished just before 1pm.

Photos of the aftermath of the blaze in local media showed the charred remains of the sprawling guesthouse as emergency workers searched through the rubble.

Authorities confirmed the death of a second child on Wednesday morning and said the search for missing persons was ongoing, but did not specify how many were still missing.

Before the emergency authorities confirmed the fourth and fifth fatalities around noon on Tuesday, search and rescue teams had been set up to find five missing persons. It wasn't immediately clear if they were among those listed as missing.

The emergency directorate said the directorate's head, Raed Arafat, ordered a preliminary report to investigate what checks had been carried out at the guesthouse to help determine who was responsible for the tragedy.

According to reports by Euronews Romania, the two people in hospital are a 47-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy.

The affected area was about 1,000 square metres. There was no indication what caused the blaze.

Photos of the fire shared by emergency authorities show a near hollowed-out structure engulfed in flames as firefighters work to put it out.
