Odakyu Electric Railway Co. opened the Romancecar Museum on Monday in Ebina, Kanagawa Prefecture. The museum showcases 10 cars of five different models of the railway's signature limited express trains.
Located near Ebina Station on the Odakyu Line, the two-story museum with a total floor area of 4,400 square meters is the railway company's first permanent indoor exhibition facility since the line opened in 1927. The gallery's main attractions are classic Romancecar models, such as the 3100 series NSE -- the first model to have an observation deck at the front -- and the 3000 series SE, which is said to have inspired the initial designs of the Shinkansen bullet train. Visitors are able to tour the inside of some of the vehicles.
The museum also features one of the nation's largest dioramas. At 190 square meters, it replicates in minute detail the scenery along the railway line from Shinjuku to Hakone.
As a measure against the novel coronavirus, reservations are required until further notice. Admission is 900 yen for junior high school students and older.
