Roman Kemp had to beg dad Martin to say yes to Gogglebox and show he's a 'nice guy'

Roman Kemp and his dad Martin have been firm favourites of Gogglebox since they signed up to the celebrity version of the show three years ago.

However, Roman has revealed their involvement on the show almost didn't happen after his dad Martin initially said no to producers.

Capital FM DJ Roman, who was a huge fan of the Channel 4 series, said he had to work to convince the Spandau Ballet star, 59, that it would be a good idea to take part.

Roman, 28, says thanks to a string of gritty acting roles - including crime drama The Krays and starring as EastEnders' bad boy Steve Owen - people were convinced his old man wasn't a nice guy.

Roman says he assured his dad an appearance on Gogglebox would be a good way for people to see the real him.

"I've always loved it but I had to convince my dad to do it. They approached us and I was like, "Oh my God absolutely let's do it.'

"Then I said to my dad, 'Will you do it with me? Because they want us to do it together'.

"And he said, 'No I don't think so. I don't want people in the house. I don't want people to see me scratching my bits and all that.'

"I said, 'Dad you have no idea how good this will be," says Roman.

The 28-year-old said he grew up with everyone thinking his dad was a 'scary bloke' and he wanted to break the image.

"He comes across like bit of a distant, larger than life character and no one knew what he's like as a person.

"That is the nicest thing about doing Gogglebox that finally people get to see my dad who he really is and he's not some scary bloke.

"He's really fun to be around and now everyone can see it."

Viewers were left in hysterics last week when they saw Martin go flying with a bowl of popcorn after tripping over his coffee table in front of the cameras.

"Three years ago when we first agreed to do it, I know for a fact that if he'd have fallen over he would have said 'No, take that out that's not going in the show," said Roman.

"But now I feel like he's happy with who he is on camera so that's been really refreshing."

Fresh from filming his latest Gogglebox scenes, Roman, who is fronting Booking.Com's #RivalsReUnited campaign, is lucky enough to be heading to Wembley Stadium to watch England take on Scotland in the Euros.

The last time the radio and TV star went to an England game was when dad Martin took him to watch England play Scotland in Euro 1996 when he was just three years old.

"I always miss things because the tournaments are in other counties and I've never been able to make it because of work," said Roman.

"But what's funny is that this is my first England game since they last played Scotland in 1996.

"That was at the old Wembley. My dad took me and my sister to the match and it was absolutely freezing.

"I'm absolutely buzzing for tonight though," said Roman.

"I do have a real worry though that we won't be ready for how up for it Scotland are."

According to stats by Booking.Com Scotland supporters feel so passionately about this match, that nearly nine in ten believe beating England would be as emotional as winning the whole tournament.

"This means everything to Scottish fans and rightly so. They've watched England mess it up in countless tournaments and now we are finally facing off against each other.

"The best thing about it is it feels like a massive party between in England and Scotland and we've all decided to meet at Wembley.

"After the year we've had everyone just wants to enjoy the atmosphere and seeing fans in the stadium."
