Roman Kemp gets emotional as he dedicates his TRIC Award to late producer Joe Lyons

Capital Breakfast's Roman Kemp got emotional as he paid tribute to his late best pal producer Joe Lyons after winning a TRIC Award.

The radio presenter, 28, was hosting the ceremony this afternoon, which saw the likes of Piers Morgan and Kate Garraway accept shiny gongs for their TV work.

Roman was presented with an award for Best Radio Personality, and was overcome with emotion as he told the audience that Joe, who worked closely with him on Capital, is "the reason I'm doing what I'm doing".

Looking proud as he picked up the award, Roman said: "Last time I was here, I was with my best friend.

"He made me the person that I am in terms of work.

"So Joe Lyons, who we really sadly lost, he is literally the reason I'm doing what I'm doing. I love him so much and I thank him everyday."

Roman met Joe when he started at Capital in 2014, with Joe becoming his producer and mentor, and on his death, Roman said that it "ripped his life apart".

Roman said: “He was with me right from my very first show. He taught me everything I didn’t know about sitting in a radio studio.”

He has since received praise for fronting a BBC documentary in which he spoke about the sudden death of his friend.

He told viewers: "If you'd have lined up 20 people you would have thought were suffering mentally he [Joe] would have been the last person.

"He was the happiest person, putting everyone ahead of him and it ripped my whole life apart - I could not understand it.

"I didn't know what had happened. It ripped my life, his whole family, his close friends, our team, everything and it just put me in this state where I'd feel like I knew I had to do something for him and for his family I guess."
