Roman Abramovich sent transfer message as Chelsea try to bridge gap with Liverpool and Man City

Jamie Redknapp says Chelsea's summer transfer business shows Roman Abramovich is still interested in Chelsea.

The Blues have made a big splash in the transfer market this summer, securing deals for Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner already.

They have also been linked with Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell and Jan Oblak as Frank Lampard looks to strengthen the Blues' squad following his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Sky Sports pundit Redknapp has backed the business but warned that there is still a big gap to the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.

Frank Lampard on impact of Champions League on transfers

"Well he's so driven Frank, he's been driven throughout his career," Redknapp said.

"He wants to be a leader, wants to be a winner and that's what he's done.

"There's no doubt at all he'll be speaking to the owners and I do get the feeling the owner's interested at the moment.

"The fact they've signed Werner, the fact they've signed Ziyech, they're talking about Havertz as well who is a really talented player from Germany, Declan Rice has had a mention as well in the papers.

"So there are a lot of players that Chelsea are getting aligned to.

"If Frank gets those players in, I still think defensively he will look at that and think we conceded too many goals this year.

"Finding a good goalkeeper is not going to be easy, he made a big decision leaving Kepa Arrizabalaga out and bringing in Caballero who was excellent.

"Frank's under no illusions, they need to buy players to get to that next level.

"Man City and Liverpool are still on a different level and that's why they are so far ahead.

"But slowly they've got to bridge that gap, bring in better players, they've got the right manager in place."
