Romain Saiss omission gives transfer hint as Harvey Elliott continues Liverpool evolution

Liverpool have the chance to once again close the gap to Manchester City at the top of the Premier League when they take on West Ham United this afternoon.

The Reds picked up a much-needed win on Thursday as they beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 in north London.

Jurgen Klopp's side will be looking to make it back-to-back victories today, but will face a tough task against a high-flying Hammers side.

With the January transfer window about to close, the news continues at Anfield and with that being said, here is your Liverpool morning digest.

Saiss transfer hint

With Liverpool in desperate need of a centre-back, Wolves' latest squad selection may have given us a big hint.

Romain Saiss was not included in Nuno Espirito Santo's squad for their 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace yesterday.

Likewise, Saiss was left out of Wolves' starting line-up for their goalless draw with Chelsea in midweek, leading to speculation over his future.

It's worth noting the Morocco international picked up a knock in training before Wolves' FA Cup clash with Chorley and there is speculation saying that he is still struggling with the same injury.

However, the conspiracists will point out that it would not be the first time a player leaves his club after suffering with an 'unspecified knock'.

Wolves boss Nuno was coy about his centre-back when talking about him following the defeat to Palace.

“He was not available for this game,” said Nuno. “We have a small squad, all of the options are good but today they were not available for the game.

“These are decisions that we have to make. We have to know what the moment of the season is. It was a quick turnaround but we have to take care of the players.

“We have decisions to make and we have to continue. When a player is not on the squad list, sometimes you see the match squad and stay away. We have to make a list but nothing strange.

"I don’t know (if he will be available for our next game), we have to see. He was not on the squad list. Period."

Elliott continues evolution

Harvey Elliott has been in superb form for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship this season, with 12 goal contributions in the league, but his latest development might excite Liverpool supporters the most.

Elliott has predominantly been used on the right-hand side of the Rovers attack by boss Tony Mowbray, but he has also deployed him in a more central area.

LancsLive's Blackburn reporter Jaquob Crooke spoke to the ECHO on a special Loans Watch podcast and detailed how the teenager was used in the false nine position by Mowbray.

"He tried Elliott in that false nine position against Huddersfield Town and the first 15 minutes it worked, but the team performance was lacking," Crooke said.

Elliott's ability to also play in the centre at times will only increase the number of comparisons to Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.

Salah often switches with Roberto Firmino or Sadio Mane and moves into the centre of the pitch, while one of the other two take his place on the right-hand side.

In fact, it's that kind of fluidity that has made them one of the most-feared front trios in world football.

Elliott, despite his natural position being on the wing, is showing great versatility in the second tier as he continues to shine at Ewood Park.
