Roma have sacked their coach Rudi García, and his assistants Frederic Bompard and Claude Fichaux, after a run of one win their past seven Serie A games.

Pressure increased on García following the 1-1 home draw with Milan on Saturday, which left the club in fifth place, having been top in October. They were also eliminated from the Italian Cup last month by Serie B’s Spezia.

García was appointed in June 2013 and led Roma to consecutive second-place finishes in Serie A. However, the club said that the recent results had led the board to “move in a new direction”.

While no immediate replacement was announced, Luciano Spalletti is widely expected to be hired for his second stint in charge.

Roma’s president Jim Pallotta said: “On behalf of myself and everyone at AS Roma, I’d like to thank Rudi García for all of his hard work since joining the club. We’ve all enjoyed some great moments during his time at Roma but we believe that this is the right time for a change.”
