Roma opt against signing former Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell

Former Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell has failed in his bid to secure a move to Roma.

The Italian giants have decided against signing the former England midfielder after a trial, according to Sky in Italy.

Rodwell is believed to have gone through a medical and physical testing with the Serie A side last weekend, but failed to do enough to earn himself a deal.

The former Everton, Manchester City, Sunderland and Blackburn midfielder has been without a club after leaving Ewood Park at the end of last season.

Rodwell joined the Black Cats for £10million in 2014, but after both Simon Grayson and Chris Coleman failed to inspire Rodwell into action on the pitch, he ended his career on Wearside frozen out of the first-team picture.

His relationship with the club's supporters also become strained due to his deal not containing a wage-cut clause following relegation from the Premier League.

Eventually Released from his Sunderland contract in 2018, he joined Rovers as a free agent, where he made 18 first-team appearances.
